Why Tuckpointing Matters

Mortar is the sacrificial part of a masonry chimney — it's designed to wear out before the brick does, and that's by design, because mortar is easier and cheaper to replace than brick. Years of freeze-thaw cycles, rain, and general weather exposure gradually erode mortar joints, leaving gaps that let water reach the brick and the structure behind it.

Once mortar joints start failing, the problem doesn't stay contained. Water gets behind the brick face, and in cold weather, that trapped moisture freezes and expands, which is how you end up with spalling or cracked brick that could have been avoided with earlier repointing.

When You Might Need This

• You can see mortar crumbling or missing between bricks
• There are visible gaps where mortar used to be
• Water seems to be getting through the joints rather than the brick itself
• The chimney is more than 15-20 years past its last repointing

What Happens

We grind out the deteriorated mortar to a consistent depth without damaging the surrounding brick, then repoint the joints with a mortar mix matched to your existing masonry in both strength and color. Done correctly, tuckpointing restores both the structural integrity of the joints and the appearance of the chimney — it shouldn't be obvious where the new work starts and stops. This kind of deterioration is often flagged during a Level 2 inspection before it progresses to brick damage.
